Audible Launches “Read and Listen” Feature for Enhanced Book Experience

Audible has introduced a new “Read and Listen” feature that synchronizes audiobook narration with on-screen text, allowing users to simultaneously read along as they listen. This functionality is available for titles where both ebook and audiobook versions are owned, providing a karaoke-style highlighting of the text being read.

Increased Engagement and Accessibility

Audible’s internal data indicates that users who currently combine listening and reading consume nearly twice as much content monthly compared to audiobook-only listeners. The company anticipates this feature will further boost engagement by providing a more versatile reading experience.

Beyond entertainment, Audible emphasizes the feature’s potential for accessibility, particularly for individuals with dyslexia, low vision, or ADHD. Research suggests simultaneous reading and listening can also improve comprehension and retention, making it a valuable tool for learners.

Global Rollout and Amazon Integration

The “Read and Listen” library supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French, with discounted audiobook options for existing ebook owners.

This isn’t a completely new concept within Amazon’s ecosystem; the Kindle app already offers a similar “Voice” experience. However, this marks the first time Audible is integrating this capability directly into its platform.

The feature is currently live in the U.S. with planned expansions to the UK, Australia, and Germany later this year.

Audible’s new feature bridges the gap between traditional reading and immersive audio experiences, offering a dynamic way to consume books that caters to diverse learning styles and accessibility needs.
