Meta Cashes In on Your Ears

It’s happening. The audio boost is going premium. Or rather, the free ride is over.

Meta slapped time limits on that neat new trick for hearing people clearly in crowded rooms. You get three hours a month for free. Just three. Don’t forget. The time doesn’t carry over to next week, there is no ticker to check how much you’ve used, and it simply disappears at month’s end. Poof.

Want more? Pay up. The Meta One Premium subscription runs twenty dollars a month. Even with that cash drop, you’re still capped. Fifteen hours. Is fifteen hours a lot? Maybe. Depends on if you talk to humans or just shout at Alexa.

“It is unclear from the page what additional fees…”

That line does a lot of work. If you go over, who knows what hits your bill. Meta hasn’t spelled it out. A spokesperson stayed silent. Classic move.

The feature itself—Conversation Focus—is useful. Launched in December, it hunts for a voice in the chaos. Filters out the clinking silverware and the blender. You’re in a noisy bistro. The other person is right in front of the camera. Suddenly their words pop forward in your earbuds. It works. Meta even filmed a demo with two women in a restaurant. It looked almost magic. Almost.

Then comes the business model.

The controversy didn’t slow them down. Facial recognition software caused quite the stir in early June. Wired dug it up. Code for recognizing faces was sitting dormant on the app, waiting in the wings. Meta pulled the plug quickly, claiming nothing reached the public. Clean break? Hard to tell.

Instead of stopping, they moved forward. A partnership with EssilorLuxottice sealed the deal in late June. New models dropped for $299. The hardware got sleeker. Kylie Jenner even slapped her name on the “Starfire” edition. The Muse Spark AI lives inside these frames.

The product is selling. The ethics are messy. The subscriptions are coming.

Three free hours. Twenty dollars for a bit more silence.

What happens when the clock runs out and you’re in the middle of an argument? Or a first date? Or trying to catch a cab?

The code stays hidden. The sales keep rolling. 🤓
