Samsung is integrating AirDrop functionality into its upcoming Galaxy S26 smartphones, effectively bridging the file-sharing gap between Android and iOS devices. The company’s Quick Share feature will soon allow seamless transfers to iPhones, ending years of platform incompatibility.
Initial Rollout and Expansion
The update begins rolling out Monday in South Korea, with planned expansion to North America, Latin America, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. While initially exclusive to the S26 series, Samsung intends to extend AirDrop compatibility to other models in the future, though specifics remain unconfirmed.
Evolution of Quick Share
Samsung’s Quick Share launched with the Galaxy S20 in 2020, lagging Apple’s AirDrop by seven years. In 2024, it merged with Google’s Nearby Share, expanding availability to Android, ChromeOS, and Windows PCs. Google Pixel 10 devices gained AirDrop support in 2025. This latest move broadens the ecosystem further, simplifying file sharing for users across operating systems.
Enabling iPhone Compatibility
To use the feature, Galaxy S26 owners must first enable “Share with Apple devices” within their phone’s settings, under “Connected devices” and then “Quick Share”. Once activated, file transfers to iPhones become straightforward.
This integration matters because it reduces friction for users who frequently collaborate or share content with people on different platforms. The shift demonstrates a growing industry trend toward interoperability, as manufacturers recognize the need to accommodate a mixed-OS reality.
The move also highlights how Android has been slowly catching up to Apple’s established features in convenience and usability. By embracing AirDrop-like functionality, Samsung aims to create a more fluid experience for its users, regardless of their friends’ or colleagues’ device preferences.
