Is Apple Dropping an OLED iPad Mini in October?

Hope wasn’t dead.

Just when you might have resigned yourself to a static slate lineup, the iPad mini is making a run for the table. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg says a new model could be on store shelves by October.

That’s a significant jump from the seventh-generation iPad mini, which hit the market back in 2024. This rumored device goes by the internal codename J510. The headline upgrade? An OLED screen. Better contrast, deeper blacks, less eye strain in the dark.

“A new iPad mini could hit shelves as early as October, bringing an OLED display to the compact tablet market.”

Why wait this long? Apple seems to be cycling its product lines aggressively. The J510 isn’t traveling alone in rumor-mill territory. Gurman mentioned entry-level iPads (code-named J580/J581 depending on the source, but generally referred to as J581 here with a faster processor) and new iPad Air models (J807 for the 11-inch, J837 for the 13-inch) are in development. Those won’t be here until 2027, though.

The iPad Pro is reportedly getting its own refresh next year, too.

So where does that leave your wallet?

Let’s talk price, because the landscape shifted last month. Apple raised prices on new and refurbished hardware. The previous iPad mini was $499. It is now $599.

Do the math. An upgrade in screen technology—switching to OLED—almost never comes for free. The current iPad Air, originally $599, now costs $749. The 11-inch iPad Pro jumped $200, landing at $1,199.

What’s driving this inflation? Part of it is component cost. We’re navigating shortages in RAM and memory chips. It forces tech giants like Apple to pass costs down the line.

Apple hasn’t commented on the rumors. They usually don’t until launch day. But the timeline for the iPad Mini seems tight. If October holds up, you’re looking at a premium compact device arriving in a market that suddenly got a lot more expensive.

Is an OLED screen worth the inevitable premium over the current model? Probably.

But are you ready to pay $799 or more for it?
