Looking for answers to the standard puzzle? Head over to our daily roundup. This is for the other one.
Today’s Sports Edition had me sweating over the green category. The rest? Fine. Just tricky. If you want to play along without the guesswork, scroll down.
A quick housekeeping note. Connections: Sports Edition is owned by The Athletic. Not the NYT Games app. It lives in the Athletic’s app. You can also play it on their site, for free, if that floats your boat.
It’s a sister puzzle, technically, but it feels different.
Where do we start?
Yellow is easy. Always is.
Big Apple baseball. That’s the cue.
Green is the trip hazard today. Think bike gear.
Blue requires knowing your conference realignment history.
Purple? Just weird words that mean the same thing.
Here is the breakdown. Ranked from obvious to “why did I think of this?”
Yellow Group
Informal names for the New York Yankees.
– Bronx Bombers
– Evil Empire
– Pinstripes
– Yanks
Green Group
Tour de France jerseys.
Note: This was the one that stuck me. You know the yellow leader jersey. What about the others?
– Green (best sprinter)
– Polka dot (mountains)
– White (young rider)
– Yellow (general classification)
Blue Group
Home towns for Big 12 universities.
Not Big 10. Don’t mix those up.
– Boulder
– Fort Worth
– Manhattan
– Waco
Purple Group
What does it mean to get “booted”? Or to use a “boot” on the field?
The definitions diverge here, but the word stays.
– Cleat (soccer/football)
– Eject
– Kick
– Mishandle (like a player or a ball)
Sometimes “boot” means you made a bad tackle. Sometimes it means you left. Context is key.
Anyway. That’s it. The yellow ones were free points. The purple ones were… whatever they are.
Did you get the polka dot jersey right away?
